Mr. EDMUND HARVEY:

22.

asked the President of the Board of Education how many local education authorities in England and Wales have appointed organisers of physical instruction, and how many have failed to appoint them; and what steps in this connection are being taken by the Board?

Out of 318 local education authorities in England and Wales, 82 at present employ organisers of physical instruction. The Board have on several recent occasions, notably by means of Circular 1291 (of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy), urged authorities to appoint such officers, and will continue to do so.

Can the right hon. Gentleman do something to increase the number of these organisers?

I have just said that the Board are doing everything they can.
