asked the tinder-Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he can state the number of aliens, naturalised or not, now serving terms of imprisonment in the United Kingdom?

Mr. DAVIES:

I am informed that out of a. total of 9,455 prisoners under sentence in prisons in England and Wales, 117 are aliens. In Scottish prisons there are 19 aliens among the 1,820 prisoners. There are no aliens in prison in Northern Ireland.

Mr. M AXTON:

How many alien prisoners in Scottish prisons are of English nationality?

Mr. DAVIES:

It would be difficult to give that reply to-day, but I can tell the hon. Member that there are no Welshmen there.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
