asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Desborough Committee on police pay and conditions has been discharged by him: if so, for what reason; if they intend to make any Report on the matters referred to the Committee; if so, will such Report be circulated to Members; and, if so, when?

Mr. DAVIES:

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. I understand that the Committee are meeting this afternoon, and I cannot at present make any statement as to their intentions.

Secretary of State

Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
