asked the Under-Secretary to the Scottish Board of Health whether he has any information regarding the property at Craigneuk, Motherwell, known as McConnell's Buildings; whether he is aware that in one portion thereof, partitioned off, a stable, an ex-service man, his wife and five children are at present residing; and whether he will take steps to provide better housing accommodation in this district?

I am informed that the property in question was constructed in October, 1920, by the conversion of a stableman's bothy, and the inclusion of a portion of a building previously used as a bottling store. The Dean of Guild Court reserved to the town council as the local authority under the Housing Acts the right to close the property at any time. As regards the second part of the question, I have no information. With regard to the last part of the question, the local authority have already completed 334 houses under the State-assisted scheme, and 316 are under construction, the total deficit on which will fall upon the State. Further proposals of the Government for increasing the provision of houses are contained in the Measure which is now before the House.
