Oral Answers to Questions — Government Departments. – in the House of Commons at on 26 July 1922.
Captain Charles Loseby
, Bradford East
asked the Secretary of State for Air if he will state the number of officials, respectively, in the Secretariat of the Air Ministry, and the technical Departments in receipt of total emoluments exceeding £500 per annum, whose services have been, or are being, dispensed with as a result of recent economies recommended by the Geddes Committee?
The Secretary of State for AIR (Captain Guest):
I assume that my hon. and gallant Friend uses the term technical in the broad professional sense. On this assumption, the figures representing the reduction since 1st January, 1922, of officials in receipt of total emolument exceeding £500 per annum are as follow:
| In the Service, Professional and Research Departments | 31 |
| In the Secretariat, including the Finance Department, etc. | 5 |
Secretary of State was originally the title given to the two officials who conducted the Royal Correspondence under Elizabeth I. Now it is the title held by some of the more important Government Ministers, for example the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
