Communities and Local Government written question – answered at on 4 February 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government what level of reserves town and parish councils are required to maintain; and what the average level of reserves is for each of these types of local authorities.
There is no prescriptive national guidance on the minimum or maximum level of reserves, either as an absolute amount or as a percentage of the budget. It is for local authorities to determine the level and use of reserves, as part of their overall financial planning.
The Department for Communities and Local Government does not collect any data relating to the levels of reserves held by town and parish councils.
