Justice written question – answered at on 24 January 2013.
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how many people were remanded (a) in custody and (b) on bail in each month in (i) 2010, (ii) 2011 and (iii) 2012.
The estimated number of defendants who were remanded in custody and the number of defendants remanded on bail at all courts in England and Wales, by month in 2010 and 2011 (latest currently available), is shown in the table.
The table presents data by month based on the final date on which the defendants appeared in court and proceedings were concluded. The date on which the court made remand decisions on those defendants is not held centrally, with remand decisions potentially made at an earlier stage during proceedings in previous months.
Data for 2012 are planned for publication in May 2013.
