Treasury written question – answered at on 17 December 2012.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make representations to the European Commission and other member states in support of an increase in the limit set for goods imported into the EU which are exempt from VAT under Council Directive 2006/79/EC.
When deciding where to set the threshold for this import VAT relief on small non-commercial consignments, careful consideration has to be given to balancing the tax impact on individuals, with the impact on small UK businesses who are required to account for VAT on similar goods regardless of their value. As there is no evidence that the current threshold is causing difficulties to individuals, whereas there is recent clear evidence that a high import relief threshold has an adverse impact on small businesses, the UK has no plans to raise this issue with the European Commission.
