To ask Her Majesty's Government how many and what percentage of inmates of young offender institutions were enrolled in (1) GCSE, and (2) NVQ courses, in each of the past 10 years.

To ask Her Majesty's Government how many and what percentage of inmates of young offender institutions achieved passes in (1) GCSE, and (2) NVQ courses, in each of the past 10 years.

Young people will have access to a range of courses and qualifications, including GCSE and NVQ courses, according to their educational needs and objectives while in custody.

Most of the information requested is not centrally available. However, I am able to provide data for some of the period for GCSE passes only, in respect of 16-17 year-olds in young offender institutions run by the public sector. The information is set out in the following table.
