To ask the Secretary of State for Health whether he plans to place requirements on the NHS Commissioning Board to improve patient support for carers whose health is affected by their caring duties.

“Our NHS care objectives: A draft mandate to the NHS Commissioning Board” was published for consultation on 4 July. The draft mandate emphasises the importance of identifying and meeting the needs of carers, and proposes a specific objective asking the board to improve support for carers (objective 15). Annex B to the draft mandate proposes some key measures for assessing progress on the objectives, and asks for evidence that carers are supported to look after their health and well-being (annex B, page 10). The mandate will be published in the autumn of this year, and the NHS Commissioning Board will have a legal obligation to seek to meet the objectives it sets out.
