Khat: Smuggling
Home Department

John Spellar (Warley, Labour)
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment she has made of the level of smuggling of khat from the UK by organised crime and terrorist groups.

James Brokenshire (Old Bexley and Sidcup, Conservative)
The Home Office has not made any formal assessment into the level of khat exportation from the UK by organised crime and terrorist groups. The Government are currently reviewing the case for control of khat under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs will consider all evidence on this issue available to it. Its advice will inform the Secretary of State for the Home Department’s decision.
