To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government with reference to the iRail 2012 lecture by Professor Andrew McNaughton, Designing High Speed Rail for Britain, what assessment he has made of the suggestion that the construction of HS2 will lead to a new city constructed on greenbelt land in the Meriden Gap between Birmingham and Coventry; and if he will make a statement.
We have not made any assessment of the comments attributed to Professor Andrew McNaughton that the construction of High Speed 2 could lead to the development of a new city around the proposed Birmingham Interchange Station adjacent to the National Exhibition Centre, and nor has the Government ever made such a policy proposal.
