Treasury written question – answered at on 8 March 2012.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has made any assessment of the effect of suspending the beer duty escalator on the number of pub closures.
Decisions on duty rates are a matter for the Chancellor as part of the Budget process.
Given the large number of factors contributing to the success or otherwise of pubs, the relationship between beer duty and pub closures cannot be readily discerned.
