To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment he has made of the effect of mindfulness-based practices on levels of (a) mental health, (b) depression and (c) physical health.

I refer the hon. Member to the written answer I gave him on 3 October 2011, Hansard, column 1406W, which outlines the research that has been carried out on this treatment. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has evaluated and recommends the use of mindfulness-based therapies as a psychological intervention for the prevention of relapse within its guideline “Depression: the treatment and management of depression in adults”, a copy of which has been placed in the Library.
