To ask Her Majesty's Government how the proposal in the Foreign Secretary's speech of 1 July "to inspire others with our values of political freedom" relates to their cut in support for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy of £380,000 this year.

My right honourable friend the Foreign Secretary announced a 10 per cent reduction this year to the Westminster Foundation for Democracy as a contribution to reducing public expenditure. He made clear our desire to sustain funding to the foundation in future years subject to resources. This reduction still means that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will provide over £3 million this year to the Westminster Foundation for Democracy to support its work around the world in deepening democracy.
