Written answers and statements, 3 November 2009

Rudi Vis (Finchley & Golders Green, Labour)
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice what the statutory authority is for placing children in secure training centres; and if he will make a statement.

Maria Eagle (Minister of State (also in the Government Equalities Office), Ministry of Justice; Liverpool, Garston, Labour)
Secure training centres were established by the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, and the Youth Justice Board (YJB) was established by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.
The Youth Justice Board for England and Wales Order 2000 (SI 1160) amended the function of the YJB to include the authority to place young people into custody, including secure training centres, on behalf of the Secretary of State.
