To ask the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families with reference to the answer of 21 July 2008, Official Report, column 929W, on children: disadvantaged, how many and what proportion of (a) all pupils and (b) pupils eligible to receive free school meals did not attain a GCSE at a grade higher than a D in 2008.

126,868 pupils did not attain a GCSE at a grade higher than a D in 2007/08. This represents 21.3 per cent. of pupils at the end of key stage 4 in maintained schools.

31,644 pupils eligible to receive free school meals did not attain a GCSE at a grade higher than a D in 2007/08. This represents 42.4 per cent. of eligible pupils at the end of key stage 4 in maintained schools.

Note

Other equivalent qualifications to GCSEs are not included in this answer. Only full GCSEs (including double awards) have been considered.
