Jo Swinson (East Dunbartonshire, Liberal Democrat)

I am pleased to announce that the Government have written to the Low Pay Commission setting out what we would like the Commission to consider on the national minimum wage. The document contains the Government’s interim evidence on economic and non-economic issues, including the minimum wage rates, the youth labour market and apprenticeships. An updated version of the evidence will be published later when the latest information on earnings and economic forecasts will be included.

A copy of the evidence will be placed in the Libraries of both Houses and will be available from the BIS website at: www.bis.gov.uk.

I have been meeting with the Low Pay Commission for about 5 years, on the issue of employment agencies in the entertainments industry, taking most and sometimes all a 'workers' earnings, for the single days work offered that year, in agency fees - therefore denying the 'worker' the Minimum Wage.

NMW Regulations are silent, when it comes to employment agencies. The NMW Regulations only refer to employers - who must pay at least the NMW. So 'workers' in the entertainments industry, TV and film, are in the unique position, of not getting/not being allowed the NMW, when working through an employment agency.

The LPC yearly reports have been falling on deaf ears. Ministers continue to ignore workers in this sector. Even the TUC have failed to get a Minister to admit the failure of NMW Regulations, to protect vulnerable workers.

Will Jo Swinson be any different?
