Ms Charlotte Atkins: The Civil Aviation Authority does not use the term "Major Defect" in its classification of occurrences. Reported instances of smoke or fumes in the cabin vary from a transitory, unidentified smell to visible smoke and fumes. The Authority has no plans to classify all such occurrences as high severity.
