European Affairs (9 Dec 2008) has video

Patricia Hewitt: ...a very interesting and well-informed speech. It was also a pleasure to hear my right hon. Friend the Member for Cynon Valley (Ann Clwyd), who speaks with deep passion and knowledge about Turkey, Iraq, the Kurdish people and their culture. She gave us a rather pertinent reminder of what an unfree Parliament really looks like. However, rather than following those two Members in speaking...

Oral Answers to Questions — Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Women's Rights (Basra) (8 Jan 2008) has video

Patricia Hewitt: My hon. Friend will recall that immediately after the fall of Saddam Hussein, the British Government took steps to ensure that Iraqi women from all the different communities in Iraq were able to come together and have a strong voice in the shaping of the new constitution and the election of the new Parliament. Can he assure me that the Government will continue to support a strong voice for...

Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Industry: Iraq (Reconstruction Contracts) (7 Apr 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: ...my hon. Friend on his record of asking parliamentary questions and on his last question in the House. I have checked the position of Tariq Aziz and other war criminals awaiting trial in Iraq. Tariq Aziz has a named counsel of record registered with the Iraq special tribunal, and I understand that he has seen him twice already. Mr. Ludot and Mr. Faupin, the other lawyers in question, are...

Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Industry: Iraq (Reconstruction Contracts) (7 Apr 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: ...in sending our congratulations to President Talabani, who assumes office today. I also congratulate my hon. Friend on her stalwart efforts over a very long period to support the oppressed people of Iraq during Saddam Hussein's regime and since the end of the conflict. I very much hope that despite the divisions within this House on the conflict itself we can all now unite in supporting the...

Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Industry: Iraq (Reconstruction Contracts) (7 Apr 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: ...end his parliamentary career. The courage of many such people—not only the staff working directly for British and other western firms, but many of my own officials who voluntarily went out to Iraq to help in the aftermath of the conflict, and above all the Iraqi people, particularly when working with western firms and therefore likely to be a target for terrorist attack—is to...

Written Answers — Trade and Industry: Iraq (9 Mar 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: My Department has provided information and assistance to a number of British companies who have won contracts in Iraq. However, British companies are not required to report details to the Government of contracts they have won or work they are doing in Iraq. Nor is there a central organisation that collects and publishes such information. There is therefore no definitive list of such firms.

Written Answers — Trade and Industry: Iraq (4 Feb 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: The Government want to see a vibrant private sector in Iraq that will create jobs and economic growth for the Iraqi people in the future. We also want to see UK companies play a substantial role in the reconstruction of Iraq's essential infrastructure. It is essential that the right skills and resources are utilised in the reconstruction process. The UK private sector has many of these.

Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Industry: Iraq (27 Jan 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: I share the condemnation by my hon. Friend and many others of any abuse of prisoners that has taken place. Of course, the security situation is difficult, but the reality in Iraq is that its economy is growing and its water and sanitation services are significantly better than they were under Saddam Hussein. We have got thousands of schools and hospitals working, and we have got more Iraqis...

Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Industry: Iraq (27 Jan 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: ...Government. They will have to make the judgment about how long they want coalition forces to support them but, for the moment, we will continue to provide that support both directly and by training Iraq's own police and security forces.

Oral Answers to Questions — Trade and Industry: Iraq (27 Jan 2005)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: I hope that the hon. Gentleman welcomes the fact that the Paris Club recently agreed to forgive 80 per cent. of Iraq's outstanding debts, as that is important in enabling reconstruction to take place. In the long term, with the enormous resources that Iraq has, there is no reason at all why it should not be able to repay debts. The ECGD, within a stringent risk and commercial framework, makes...

Oral Answers to Questions — Minister for Women: Iraq (8 Jul 2004)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: My hon. Friend raises an extremely important point. As she knows, we have throughout supported Iraqi women who want and, I believe, deserve a strong voice in the future government of their country. I am delighted to say that two of the seven commissioners on the Independent Electoral Commission for Iraq are women. There is indeed a commitment that 25 per cent. of the candidates for the new...

Oral Answers to Questions — Minister for Women: Iraq (8 Jul 2004)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: I must say that the Iraqi women with whom I have worked closely over the past 12 months would not recognise the hon. Gentleman's description of the previous regime, under which many of them and their families suffered and from which several of them were forced to flee. We do not seek to dictate how the Iraqi people should shape their future society and Government, and we support Iraqi people,...

Written Answers — Minister for Women: Iraq (8 Jul 2004)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: The Iraqi Women's Higher Council (IWHC) was the first of a number of women's organisations to evolve over the last year. Following a scoping study of the needs of new, emerging women's NGOs in Iraq, commissioned by DFID earlier this year, the UK is now supporting the development of a diverse NGO sector. We believe this will provide a strong and sustainable base for ensuring women's voices are...

Written Answers — Trade and Industry: Iraq (20 Apr 2004)

Ms Patricia Hewitt: Because of the large number of different organisations involved in awarding reconstruction contracts in Iraq, it has not been possible to maintain an overall picture of the total volume of contracts awarded or the cumulative total. In addition, there is no central organisation that collects, collates and publishes such information. However, a number of British companies have been awarded...
