Points of Order: Promoting Democracy and Human Rights (13 Oct 2008)

Jo Swinson: I too welcome the Minister to her new position. I look forward to our exchanges both here and in Westminster Hall, although I hope not to spend quite so much time with her as I did with her predecessor now that the European Union (Amendment) Act 2008 is on the statute book. It is an important time to have this debate. As has been mentioned, this year, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the...

Oral Answers to Questions — Home Department: Identity Cards (19 Feb 2007)

Jo Swinson: I surveyed my constituents on the issue and received more than 700 responses. Of the people in East Dunbartonshire who responded, 87 per cent. said that they would rather the money was spent on more police in their community than on the Government's ID cards project. When will the Government realise that their plans for ID cards are unnecessary, unwanted and undeniably a complete waste of money?

Identity Card Scheme (10 May 2006)

Jo Swinson: I am glad to have secured this debate on an important matter, especially as the Identity Cards Bill received Royal Assent on 30 March. ID cards are a controversial topic. The Government were defeated five times in the other place before the legislation finally passed after the Government's concession to delay the scheme until 2009. Public support for ID cards is falling sharply, from about80...

For many people, those costs might end up well in excess of £93. In addition, how can we be certain that the cost will remain at £93, given that it has already escalated on several occasions? My hon. Friend the Member for Orkney and...

Identity Card Scheme (10 May 2006)

Jo Swinson: ...' money could be better spent on—regardless of whether the amount is £3 billion or £5 billion, or £10 billion or £19 billion. For clarity, let me remind Members of the supposed aims of the ID card scheme according to the Home Office regulatory impact assessment which it published in November 2004: to reduce illegal migration and illegal working; to enhance the...

Identity Card Scheme (10 May 2006)

Jo Swinson: I thank the hon. Gentleman for his intervention. As a Liberal, I have a principled objection to ID cards. We do not need the system, and no evidence has been presented to the House to suggest that it is necessary. However, as the debate is about the cost of the scheme, I have focused on those particular arguments. The hon. Gentleman's point is well made. I am opposed to ID cards in principle,...
