- Orders of the Day — Government of Wales Bill — [3rd Allotted Day]: Schedule 7 — Acts of the Assembly (30 Jan 2006)
Hywel Williams: Amendment No. 33 refers to hunting with dogs, which has been the subject of much controversy in this place. I had the dubious pleasure of serving on the Standing Committee that considered the Hunting Bill for many weeks. We discussed the issue very fully, and one of my amendments proposed that the Assembly should have responsibility for hunting in Wales. I shall briefly rehearse the arguments...
- Fallen Livestock (29 Jun 2005)
Hywel Williams: My attitude, and that of my party, to hunting is well known. As it happens, the Eryri hunt operates in my constituency, but it gets its feed from elsewhere, so that is not a particular issue. In some respects, sheep carcases are hardly worth taking away for such purposes. However, I agree with the hon. Gentleman as far as his constituency is concerned, and that was a properly made point. As I...
- Employment (North Wales) (25 Feb 2003)
Mr Hywel Williams: Eventually. That cost someone his job in Cardiff. He is now doing penance by taking the Hunting Bill through the House.
- Public Bill Committee: Hunting Bill: Clause 13 - Application by individual (28 Jan 2003)
Mr Hywel Williams: ...accept that farm incomes in Wales are considerably lower than they are in England? They are half the average level in England. That is a particular consideration in view of the size and income of hunts in Wales.
- Public Bill Committee: Hunting Bill: Clause 9 - The Registrar (23 Jan 2003)
Mr Hywel Williams: Does the hon. Gentleman agree that hunts operating in England should be registered in England?
- Public Bill Committee: Hunting Bill: Clause 9 - The Registrar (23 Jan 2003)
Mr Hywel Williams: ...for giving way yet again. Mysteriously, I have been reminded of a vote, which was held in the National Assembly for Wales about a year and a half ago, on the devolution of decision making on hunting to Wales. Hon. Members will be interested to know that the result was 28 in favour and 27 against. A large number of Labour Members were among those in favour.
- Public Bill Committee: Hunting Bill: Clause 9 - The Registrar (23 Jan 2003)
Mr Hywel Williams: We are not short of disagreements on hunting, as we have seen during the past few days, and we are not short of people who will take up defensive positions on hunting. As has been said many times, although hunting is not the most important issue before the House, it must be settled in a way that will last. When replying on Tuesday, the Minister said that he wanted the legislation to be...
- Public Bill Committee: Hunting Bill: Clause 9 - The Registrar (23 Jan 2003)
Mr Hywel Williams: ...illustration of the argument for having a registrar and a tribunal for Wales is language use. I should like to consider that issue a little further. Welsh is spoken by supporters and opponents of hunting in Wales. Welsh is spoken by about 20 per cent. of people across the country, but a much higher percentage of people in rural Wales speak and use Welsh as their language of everyday use....
- Hunting with Dogs (3 Dec 2002)
Mr Hywel Williams: Does the Minister accept that there are particular issues associated with hunting in Wales? They have to do with the continued viability of upland farming, and with the difficulties that the regulation of hunting on foot—and especially its possible abolition by the back door—could cause rural communities. The hunting issue in Scotland is to be decided by the Scottish Assembly, and...
