Health and Social Care (Community Health and Standards) Bill: Clause 149 — Information contained in certificates (19 Nov 2003)

Mr Simon Burns: ...pressure of time, I shall be extremely brief. We warmly welcome the Government's acceptance of the amendments, which, I understand, followed arguments made in another place by my noble Friend Lord Hunt of Wirral. As the Minister said, it is important to encourage the use of mediation where such a system is feasible in order to minimise some of the problems that might arise if that...

National Institute for Clinical Excellence (10 Apr 2003)

Mr Simon Burns: I join the Chairman of the Committee, the hon. Member for Wakefield (Mr. Hinchliffe), in his generous and appropriate comments about Lord Hunt, who was associated with the Committee, as he conducted our inquiry. The hon. Member for Wakefield has a justified reputation for being able to talk the talk fluently, but in his bluff Yorkshire manner he also has a reputation, to which the Secretary...

National Institute for Clinical Excellence (10 Apr 2003)

Mr Simon Burns: ...it seemed appropriate to go down that cul-de-sac to start with, because the Chairman of the Health Committee was so eloquent and appropriate in his comments about the loss to the Government of Lord Hunt, given the tremendous work that he did in assisting the Committee during its investigation of NICE. I listened to the speeches today with great interest, and two things struck me as...

Mr Simon Burns: ...should recognise the difference between mental health treatment and acute treatment. I know what the hon. Gentleman said, but it is interesting that the Minister in the other place, the late Lord Hunt

Community Care (Delayed Discharges Etc.) Bill: Clause 1 — Meaning of "NHS Body" and "Qualifying Hospital Patient" (19 Mar 2003)

Mr Simon Burns: The Whip is absolutely right. Lord Hunt is not dead, but he is politically dead to such an extent that the Deputy Prime Minister did not recognise that he was a human being or that he had been a member of the Administration, despite the fact that he had been for almost six years. He is politically dead, so the word "late" was probably justified in that context.

Wildlife (14 Apr 1999)

Mr Simon Burns: ...Government might introduce legislation regarding sites of special scientific interest and other wildlife considerations. They might then add to that the issue of access to the countryside, possibly hunting—which, although a countryside issue, would be fraught with danger—and other unrelated issues that come under the umbrella of the countryside. I saw the hon. Member for...

Orders of the Day — Social Security Bill (2 Nov 1987)

Mr Simon Burns: ...mindful of an incident that occurred in the Chelmsford shire hall in 1938. That incident was the last recorded episode of spontaneous combustion when a garrulous lady blew herself into flames at a hunt ball.
