Business, Innovation and Skills: NEETs (12 Nov 2009)

David Anderson: Would my hon. Friend agree that the best that we can do in this situation is to carry on working for these young people and continue the Government initiatives? We should not listen to the Opposition who have nothing but crocodile tears to offer this country.

Business, Innovation and Skills: Topical Questions (12 Nov 2009)

David Anderson: When will the Minister's Department own up to its responsibilities in relation to people with pleural plaques who have been denied compensation? Will he agree to work with other Ministers and Members of the House to ensure that we repeal the Law Lords' decision of two years ago and give those people the money that they are entitled to?

Muscular Dystrophy (3 Nov 2009)

David Anderson: This morning, the all-party group heard evidence from a specialist working in the west midlands about the practical, day-to-day problems that arise when someone with one of these diseases goes into a normal emergency service because they have fallen over and broken their leg or because they have a headache, but they end up being kept in for much longer than they need to be because their...

Muscular Dystrophy (3 Nov 2009)

David Anderson: It is a great pleasure to see you in the Chair, Mr. Sheridan. I congratulate the hon. Member for Meriden (Mrs. Spelman) on her contribution to a debate that is taking place across the country. Yes, there are problems in the west midlands, but I would not want anyone to get the idea that the west midlands is alone in that. I am the chair of the all-party muscular dystrophy group, and in...

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: The Minister has obviously made the assumption that the only way to pay for this is out of income tax. However, people carry on paying tax long after they have retired; everybody pays VAT every day of the week. I made the point in my contribution that one possible approach would be to have a 0.5 per cent. rise in VAT, which would put £2.5 billion directly into the care budget.

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: As Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, my hon. Friend the Member for Harlow (Bill Rammell), I have had quite a tough week. I have sat through Adjournment debates, statements, an Opposition day debate yesterday afternoon and a Westminster Hall debate. If I stand back from the issues being discussed, I can see that what was really important and what...

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: I agree absolutely. They would need medical, social and financial assessments, but my point is that that happens now and people are told, "The best place for you is in care". They say, "I know that, but I am not going in." In future, they will say, "I will go in, because my family is going to keep my home." There will be an incentive, whereas there is a disincentive at the moment because they...

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: May I suggest to my hon. Friend that one of the dangers of the personalisation of social care is that people will choose to employ those who have not been properly trained and do not have the experience or knowledge to look after people properly?

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: Does the hon. Gentleman agree that the very fact that the Conservatives call their scheme a "home protection scheme" shows where their minds are? Their policy is about protecting the home, not about delivering quality care for the elderly people of this country. [Interruption.]

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: The hon. Gentleman has laid out a plan with which I fully concur. Will he give me an idea of his party's position on how much such a system will cost the public purse?

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: Does the hon. Gentleman accept that the debate has been going on for much more than a decade? For the two decades before this party came into power, his party dismantled social care, promoted private care and cut billions of pounds from the care budget.

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: Surely that is what happens now. People are assessed for need by the local authority, but when they need to go in to a care home they refuse to, because they do not want to. When the scheme is introduced, there will be an incentive for people to go in to care because they will keep their homes, so if they are assessed for need, they will go in.

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: I just want to pick up on the point made by my hon. Friend the Member for Luton, North (Kelvin Hopkins). Can we be clear that the Secretary of State is not ruling out discussions on the type of model that has been proposed by my hon. Friend—a model that should be fully funded by tax or national insurance? Although that is not one of the options in the Green Paper, will the Secretary of...

Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: I share my right hon. Friend's unhappiness that the shadow Secretary of State is not here. Does my right hon. Friend have any idea how much of the £8,000 that was proposed to be put forward as a donation by anyone going into residential care would be kept by the private insurance company?

Oral Answers to Questions — Communities and Local Government: Topical Questions (27 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: Recent statements by the Local Government Association have echoed the view of the Fire Brigades Union that the fire control project is now out of control and should be abandoned. Does the Secretary of State accept this? If not, why is he the only one out of sync with the people who work in the service and the people who run the service?

Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Engagements (21 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: As someone who was engaged with working people in Northern Ireland for 20 years, may I tell my right hon. Friend how much I welcome his statement? I congratulate him and the leaders of all the parties in Northern Ireland on the great work that they have done to get us to where we are. Will he tell us exactly what we are going to do next to ensure that this is implemented as quickly as possible?

Nato: Royal Mail (20 Oct 2009)

David Anderson: I am sure that the Minister will agree that everyone should do what they can to cool this down. If that is the case, why does he think that the management of Royal Mail have told workers today that if they attend the picket line on their day off, they will be deducted a day's pay? Is that the way to promote good industrial relations?

Nato: Topical Questions (20 Oct 2009)

David Anderson: It is now four years since the Iraqi Government took control of the assets of the Iraqi trade union movement. In the past week, they have seized even more control of the levers of power in the unions. Will the Secretary of State meet me and Iraqi trade unions to see whether we can find a way forward to give these people real support in a situation that should not be happening?

Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Engagements (14 Oct 2009) has video

David Anderson: Does the Prime Minister agree that the best way to resolve the Royal Mail dispute would be to get the parties around the negotiating table? If he does, will he tell Lords Young and Mandelson to start to concentrate on that and stop attacking the Communication Workers Union?
