- Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (11 Nov 2009)
Bob Spink: The hon. Gentleman is making quite a bit of sense—we do not always agree—but he is speaking generally. May I press him to be specific? Does he, like me, believe that Britain's rush towards replacing Trident is inconsistent with the NPT, which we signed in 1970?
- Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (11 Nov 2009)
Bob Spink: I am grateful to the hon. Gentleman for bringing this most important matter to the House. The debate is timely. I am sure that he will not mention my contribution in the magazine Red Pepper several years ago to this debate, in which I called for the Government not to go ahead with Trident, but we all share in his welcome for President Obama's shift in policy. Does the hon. Gentleman not feel...
- Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Skills for Growth (11 Nov 2009)
Bob Spink: Will the Minister intervene and ensure that the new vocational centre for Castle Point, which I first raised and campaigned for in 1991 and which is now finally supported by Essex county council, is funded and goes ahead?
- Welfare Reform Bill (Programme) (No. 2): Clause 1 — Social security (10 Nov 2009) has video
Bob Spink: I rise to support this group of amendments generally and the renaming of council tax benefit to council tax rebate in particular. It is not a matter of gesture politics; it has real significance. I hope it will send a strong message to pensioners in particular to take up what is theirs by right. Hundreds of veterans and thousands of pensioners in my constituency could benefit from this...
- Cyprus (10 Nov 2009)
Bob Spink: The presidential election in the Turkish-occupied north in April clearly shows that an artificial deadline would probably not be helpful. Does the hon. Gentleman accept, nevertheless, the imperative to get a fair settlement as soon as possible, because the massive movement of Turkish people from Turkey to settle in Cyprus without the language or Cypriot affiliations will make a settlement...
- Olympics: Energy National Policy Statements (9 Nov 2009) has video
Bob Spink: What specifically will the Government do, however, at Copenhagen on emissions trading to ensure that carbon pricing is fixed at a sufficiently high level to ensure that the base supplies of clean coal and nuclear are made viable?
- Olympics: FOI Request (Immigration) (9 Nov 2009) has video
Bob Spink: It would be entirely wrong to cast aspersions on the Minister's integrity, which is beyond reproach in respect of this and other matters. I am ashamed that Opposition Members should seek to do that. However, will the Minister consider the uncontrolled immigration from the European Union countries, which may not be totally in the British interest, and seek to find a way of reining it in?
- Business of the House: Social Care Green Paper (29 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: Does the hon. Gentleman agree that the assessment of continuing care needs funding is a real problem for people who leave hospital and go into residential care, for instance following a stroke? The Government really need to put out stronger advice and guidance for health authorities to ensure that people's health needs are funded.
- Opposition Day — [20th Allotted Day]: Speaker's Committee for the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (28 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: Does the hon. Lady think that the public will be greatly impressed by the word "independent" in the title, given that the chairman will be selected by the usual suspects from this House, who have patently failed the public in not controlling Members' allowances in the past?
- Opposition Day — [20th Allotted Day]: Speaker's Committee for the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (28 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. There is still quite some time to run in this one-and-a-half-hour debate. Since the advertisements for the board and the chairman have already gone out, is it in order for the Minister not to inform the House of the salary levels that have been set for those posts?
- Opposition Day — [20th Allotted Day]: Speaker's Committee for the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (28 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: How can the right hon. Gentleman expect the public to have confidence in a so-called independent Committee that is made up of the usual suspects who have so patently failed to carry public confidence with them over the years? They also failed to accept the reforming suggestions to sort out the allowances contained in the early-day motion tabled two years ago by my hon. Friend the Member for...
- Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Nimrod Review (28 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: Three companies of my local Royal Anglian Regiment went to Afghanistan last week. They will welcome the Secretary of State's gracious words, but there are of course implications for them in the report. Will he seek to ensure that the replacement aircraft that comes in soon will be able to operate from a base much nearer its operational zone? That may help to reduce risk.
- Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Engagements (28 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: As we approach Remembrance Sunday, Canvey Island Royal British Legion proudly reaches its 75th anniversary. It also has its first Gurkha member, Laxmi Ghising. Will the Prime Minister continue his honourable support of the Gurkhas by granting them equal pension rights, and will he congratulate the British Legion?
- Oral Answers to Questions — Communities and Local Government: Sheltered Accommodation (27 Oct 2009) has video
Bob Spink: What assessment he has made of the effects on residents in 24-hour resident warden service sheltered accommodation.
