Outlawries Bill: Debate on the Address — [1st Day] (18 Nov 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Does the right hon. Gentleman think that it is a tough decision to give a huge tax giveaway to multi-millionaires by cutting inheritance tax? Is that what he means by a tough decision?

Nato: Topical Questions (20 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Last week, I visited Bangladesh, which will be critically affected by climate change. Does my right hon. Friend agree that, if we weaken our political affiliations in Europe and with other countries by fringe activities such as joining fringe groups, we will be in a weaker position when trying to deal with issues such as getting agreements on climate change and other issues critical to UK...

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Does the Minister agree that we must progress in an orderly fashion? Although I can think of other services that could be provided from Sure Start centres, we must embed those that are there and ensure that they are working properly. Our aspiration should be to add further services. One difficulty is the speed with which that should be done. We must ensure that such services are integrated in...

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Would the hon. Lady be more precise about the extra amount that will apparently be going toward the cost of further health visitors? Exactly which of the current Sure Start services will have to go in order to fund that? I am not clear about what could go without damaging the current services. It would help to have a bit more precision on that point.

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: The provision started in areas of deprivation precisely for that reason. It reaches out very much to people in difficult situations, as do some of the services that function from Sure Start centres.

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Come and visit.

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: I thank you, Mrs. Dean, for giving me time to speak. Unfortunately, I have not had time to prepare anything because I am between visitors at the beginning of this debate and visitors coming later, but, as there are no other speakers, I will happily say a few words from my experience. Derbyshire has had an absolutely excellent record in this area. It was very much at the forefront when there...

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: I absolutely agree with that. My hon. Friend mentioned health provision. An interesting area is the link between services, and how different services can function from children's centres and Sure Start provision. There has been some talk, which may be referred to later, about what happens with health visitors, and how we ensure that they are available to people. That service is provided from...

[Mrs. Janet Dean in the Chair] — Sure Start (15 Oct 2009)

Judy Mallaber: I am sorry that I was unable to be here at the start of the debate. I have visitors from Bangladesh. On my right hon. Friend's last point, would she reassure me that in my county of Derbyshire, which has been very much at the forefront over the years in early years provision and introducing Sure Start and then children's centres—we now have 46, with six in my constituency—there...

New Member: New Clause 1 — Purchase of tobacco on behalf of children (12 Oct 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: Does the hon. Gentleman not accept that one person's choice to smoke affects other people's choice not to smoke? One person's freedom stops at my nose when it comes to smoking. Although in this issue we are concerned particularly about young people, does he not accept that one person's choice affects others' freedoms?

Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Engagements (15 Jul 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: At 2 o'clock, a hanging plant basket will be handed in to No. 10 for my right hon. Friend by Perfect Pots, a social enterprise run by pupils at the Holbrook centre for autism, with the charity HOPE and local business Amberol, an example that shows how people with severe autism and learning disabilities can be assisted to make a positive contribution to the work force and their local...

Energy and Climate Change: Topical Questions (9 Jul 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: Yesterday the Energy and Climate Change Committee was told that a 500 kW tidal turbine would shortly come on-stream at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney as a result of co-operation between a small innovative company in Bristol, Tidal Generation Ltd, and Rolls-Royce in my neighbouring area. What can the Government do to encourage such co-operation, and to help small innovative...

Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Tribute to Mr. Speaker (17 Jun 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: I appear to be the last person to speak. I thank you very much for calling me, as I had forgotten to put my name down to speak in this debate. It was only when I was sitting here at the beginning of the tributes that I wondered whether I would have the nerve to stand up and ask to speak, having gone against all the protocol that we are meant to observe. However, I could not let this afternoon...

Oral Answers to Questions — Prime Minister: Engagements (17 Jun 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: Mr. Speaker, may I thank you for your kindness over the years and wish you well? Knives, age-related games and alcohol were all bought online recently by a 16-year-old acting for Greenwich trading standards without any checks being made. They were bought from Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Argos and other stores, even though his card was registered with his real date of birth and address. Will...

Oral Answers to Questions — Justice: Digital Britain (16 Jun 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: I welcome my right hon. Friend's reference to the safety and well-being of children through the proposals on the classification of video games, but will he take the time to meet the Children's Charities Coalition on Internet Safety, which on Monday launched its digital manifesto, to see how that might tie in with our proposals on a digital Britain, particularly to create a safe and exciting...

Oral Answers to Questions — Children, Schools and Families: Sure Start (15 Jun 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: What his most recent assessment is of progress in the establishment of Sure Start children's centres.

Oral Answers to Questions — Children, Schools and Families: Sure Start (15 Jun 2009) has video

Judy Mallaber: I welcome my right hon. Friend to her new position and invite her to visit one of the six excellent children's centres in my constituency, which provide a wonderful range of activities for children and support for families and mothers, and which have been shown to have improved the development of young children thanks to the work of our excellent former Labour county council. What assurances...

Oral Answers to Questions — Work and Pensions: Equality Bill (11 May 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Has the hon. Gentleman done any research on exactly how many employers have been found guilty? We know how many cases there have been, but has he done any analysis of how many employers are in that position compared with the far larger number of cases that have been settled and the infinitely larger number of cases that have not even got through the tribunals? How much research has been done...

Oral Answers to Questions — Work and Pensions: Equality Bill (11 May 2009)

Judy Mallaber: Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the plans whereby it would be very easy to do a pay audit of a company? It does not take a great deal of incomprehensible bureaucracy to do that, and it goes beyond just asking what is the pay gap, as it analyses the causes of that gap. Many proposals have been put forward that could provide a toolkit for being able to do that within a company. It really is not...
