- [John Cummings in the Chair] — Thalidomide (4 Nov 2009)
Charlotte Atkins: I want to make a point about the so-called independent review. The Thalidomide Trust has been independently reviewing the issue for 40 years, and it is the organisation that has all the knowledge. There is no need for an independent review. The trust has the information, it has its finger on the pulse and it knows exactly what the needs of its beneficiaries are.
- [John Cummings in the Chair] — Thalidomide (4 Nov 2009)
Charlotte Atkins: As a child, I used to visit the local Dr. Barnardo's home with my parents. That is where I first came across thalidomide: the home was looking after a baby with no arms or legs. That image has stayed with me for more than 40 years. I am proud to follow in the footsteps of the fantastic disability campaigner, Jack Ashley—his old constituency of Stoke-on-Trent, South, adjoins...
- [John Cummings in the Chair] — Thalidomide (4 Nov 2009)
Charlotte Atkins: The issue was the dispersed location of thalidomiders. The Department suggested that the trust should deal with one primary care trust and one local authority. However, the trust and thalidomiders say that because they are so dispersed, they would need more than one PCT and more than one local authority, which would put quite a burden on the Thalidomide Trust. How can we ensure that...
- [John Cummings in the Chair] — Thalidomide (4 Nov 2009)
Charlotte Atkins: My hon. Friend is absolutely right. A powered wheelchair can cost something like £18,000, and adapting a car can cost a staggering £60,000. Obviously the car has to be new. The whole cost is something like £60,000, and that is just for a fairly basic car that is large enough to accommodate everything that a thalidomider might need. What will happen if the pilot programme is...
- Oral Answers to Questions — Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: British Waterways (29 Oct 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: Does the Minister share my concern about the fact that Rudyard Sailability and its centre of excellence for disabled sailors at Rudyard lake is still being blocked from building the boat store that is essential to its survival, despite its victory in a public inquiry nine months ago? Will he urge British Waterways, which owns Rudyard lake, to promote talks to save a vital charity that...
- Oral Answers to Questions — Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: Topical Questions (29 Oct 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: Could the Secretary of State give the House an update on the implementation of the ban on hunting with dogs, and particularly on the impact on rural employment?
- Opposition Day — [17th Allotted Day]: NHS Dentistry (14 Oct 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: The House's last debate about dental services took place in December 2008. It was on a report from the Select Committee on Health that followed an inquiry on which I persuaded the Committee to embark. The review that arose from the criticisms made in the report was brilliantly led by Professor Jimmy Steele who, as a clinician, teacher and researcher, had the breadth of vision to pull off a...
- Opposition Day — [17th Allotted Day]: NHS Dentistry (14 Oct 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: Would not the Minister accept that the best way to promote oral health among children is to start very early? For instance, we could start in the many Sure Start centres up and down the country that bring together health, education and social services. Mothers can then work with their children to instil good oral health right from the start. Unfortunately, the Opposition are committed to...
- Oral Answers to Questions — Health: Topical Questions (13 Oct 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: Yesterday was world arthritis day. What is being done to ensure earlier diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, which is a very painful and disabling condition if it is not detected early, often leading to people being unable to work?
- Opposition Day — [11th Allotted Day]: Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust (18 May 2009)
Charlotte Atkins: Does the Minister have confidence in the procedure that Monitor adopted to secure foundation status for Stafford hospital? What worried me when Bill Moyes appeared before the Health Committee was that he talked about looking at press reports in future to get intelligence about hospitals. I would have hoped that the investigation would be much more robust. I am concerned about what that means...
- Oral Answers to Questions — Health: Topical Questions (12 May 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: Why are NHS children-only dental contracts still operating with private dentists? Is that not an unacceptable legacy of practice in the past, when parents were persuaded to take up private treatment on the basis that their children would continue to receive NHS treatment?
- Oral Answers to Questions — Health: NHS Chief Executives (24 Mar 2009) has video
Charlotte Atkins: How can my right hon. Friend ensure that any sacked chief executives, including the one at Stafford, do not receive financial benefits from their failures through some sort of golden pay-off?
