The answer to the first question is yes, pension relief would be limited to the basic rate. On the question of whether our policies are driven by marketing assumptions in marginal seats, or whether that is the preserve of the hon. Gentleman’s party leader and his team of chums from that world, I defer to him since I know far less about the trendy polling mechanisms that he and his party spend so much money on. I realise that the Conservative party has recruited people from the private sector at huge expense, and that they do not give any guidance on policy or ideology, because those issues belong to yesterday’s politics; however, they are experts on marketing. If he wants to know about such procedures, he is better off talking to the leader of his party than to me.
